A local SEO checklist for small businesses

5 November 2026 · 5 min read

If your customers come from a particular city or neighbourhood, local SEO is often the best place to start. These are the basics, in the order we would usually tackle them.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is what powers your appearance on Google Maps and in local results.

  • Claim and verify your business
  • Choose the most accurate primary category, as this is one of the most important choices on the profile
  • Add your hours, phone number, services and service areas
  • Upload real photos of your premises, team and work

Keep it up to date. Wrong opening hours lose customers and invite bad reviews.

2. Make your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match on your website, your Google profile, and the directories that matter in your country and industry. Inconsistent details create doubt, for customers and for search engines alike.

3. Ask for reviews, and answer them

Reviews influence both visibility and whether people choose you. Make it a normal step in your process to ask happy customers, and share a direct link on WhatsApp to make it easy. Reply to reviews, including the bad ones, politely and specifically.

Do not buy fake reviews. They violate Google’s policies and can get your profile penalised.

4. Give every main service its own page

A single “Services” page rarely ranks for everything. Someone searching for “root canal treatment” plus your city name should land on a page about exactly that, covering the treatment, what to expect, and how to book.

Be careful with location pages. Many near-identical pages with only the city name changed can count as doorway pages, which Google discourages. Only create them where you really serve that area and have something specific to say.

5. Get the page basics right

  • A title that names your service and location
  • A clear main heading
  • Your address and phone number on the page, with one-tap calling on mobile
  • A map on your contact page
  • LocalBusiness structured data

6. Be fast on a phone

Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move. Check that your site loads quickly on mobile data, and that the phone number and WhatsApp button are easy to tap.

7. Earn local mentions

Links and mentions from local associations, newspapers, suppliers and community events all help to show that you are a real part of the area. One genuine local mention is worth more than a pile of low-quality directory links.

Set expectations

Local SEO is steady work, not a one-time job. The businesses that keep their profile active, keep collecting reviews and keep improving their pages tend to pull ahead over time.
